FEATURED ARTIST
This year’s Featured Artist, Linda Shearin has been studying and creating art for more than 40 years. Her first inclination that she might want to be an artist someday occurred as a ten-year-old on a field trip to the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco. Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” and “Starry Night” paintings were so beautiful and intriguing. She wondered, “How do you do that?” Linda began her art journey using watercolor taking her first class in 1978. She was able to study with many fine watercolorists in the San Francisco Bay Area before a move to Mendocino, California, in 2000. Linda’s current work continues to flow in many different directions with various media from watercolor to acrylic to collage. She is always looking for a different way to paint a subject whether through media, abstraction, collage, or line drawing. Although most art interpretations “have already been done,” Linda is trying to paint something in a way that she hasn’t seen before. That can be scary sometimes, but what fun it is to try!

Garden of Joy by Linda Shearin

Original painting created by Linda Shearin for Art in the Gardens 2024:
The Botanical Gardens is such a special place to visit and I wanted to convey what it feels like when you are surrounded by all the plants, flowers, animals, insects and even weeds! It is truly joyful to spend time there, thus the title, "Garden of Joy." The painting is totally imagined, but certainly inspired by the beautiful gardens.

2024 APPAREL DESIGN CONTEST WINNER
This year we celebrate the 31st anniversary of our summer festival, Art in the Gardens (AIG) and the 2nd annual Design Contest! There were several fabulous designs entered in the contest and we are excited to announce this year's winner, Shannon Williams of Frog House Design! Her design (pictured right) captured all the fun of AIG and the natural splendor of our garden by the sea.
"A Day in the Gardens" was inspired by our summer event and all that the Gardens encompass on a beautiful summer day. To represent Art in the Gardens, Shannon included a wine bottle, wine glass, food, and a violin to represent the music and entertainment. There is also the artistic style of the design to shine on the artistic nature of the event. To express the natural beauty of the Gardens there are dahlias, fuchsias, strawberries, raspberries, ocean, birds, as well as other wildlife. This design will be featured on the 2024 Art in the Gardens shirts and other printed items.
